Organic Chemistry Teaching Resources

Professor at Cal Poly Pomona, teaching Organic Chemistry lecture and laboratory classes.
In addition to authoring an introductory organic synthesis textbook. I have developed online lab animations & tutorials, organic chemistry "clicker" questions, and online organic chemistry lectures for Educator.com. As you can probably tell, I am a strong proponent for using technology to support student success, and I have created a repository of active learning resources for Organic Chemistry, called LOCAL. I served for ten years on the Chemistry GRE committee, I was a peer reviewer for MERLOT, and I enjoy giving chemistry career presentations and K-6 science demos. Please visit my YouTube channel ChemistryConnected, see my OrganicERS spotlight, and visit my collection of COVID-19 Remote-Teaching resources and Student Engagement and Motivation resources.

    Interests & Activities

I earned my Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry at UCLA in 1996 and my B.S. degree in Chemistry from the University of Connecticut, Storrs, in 1991. I have been teaching at Cal Poly Pomona since 1996. My greatest joy is teaching and I am honored to have received the Provost's Award for Excellence in Teaching in 2013 (video and Teaching with Technology presentation). I am actively involved as an advisor to Cal Poly Pomona's chemistry club, the Student Members of the American Chemical Society (SMACS) and the Pre-Dental Society. My research interests lie in the area of Chemical Education. Mainly, I focus on developing and assessing online learning tools, developing active learning materials, including questions for Classroom Response Systems ("Clickers"). For my Ph.D., I worked with Professor Mike Jung at UCLA. These days, my personal life revolves around my family. We love the outdoors and we do a lot of traveling every summer. (story and graduation) I also enjoy golfing, going to the movies, camping, kayaking, watching football (I'm a big Dallas Cowboys fan), and all things Star Wars. My biggest hobby is collecting PEZ dispensers!
