Week 10 - 10/30
Hand Cream Formulations

Week 11 - 11/6
Aldol Condensation
(Dibenzalacetone Synthesis)

  •  Review UV-vis spectroscopy (consider: why are some organic compounds colored?)
  • Review the techniques of recrystallization and melting point.
  •  Take the Recrystallization & M.P. Canvas quiz
  • Week 12 - 11/13
    Acylation of Ferrocene

    Acylation of Ferrocene Procedure
Acylation of Ferrocene - Prep Work

  • The product will be purified by recrystallization, but a portion of the product mixture will also be analyzed by column chromatography. (see handout for an overview)
  • Review the techniques of TLC and column chromatography in the Nichols eBook, and write out the procedure for setting up and running a microscale column (instructions).
Include a sketch in your notebook!
  • Watch the TLC simulator, and complete this worksheet while exploring the module.
  • Take the TLC quiz in Canvas. You can take it as many times as you want, the highest score will be recorded in the gradebook. Be sure to click "OK" to view your results and see valuable feedback after each attempt.

  • Due next week @ start of lab
    TLC simulator worksheet
    Canvas: TLC quiz

    Week 13 - 11/20

Free chemical drawing software! Did you know that your institution has purchased a Site Subscription through PerkinElmer Informatics, makers of ChemBioDraw Ultra 13.0? This means that you are able to download fully functional chemistry or biology software and have access to online databases, via the Cal Poly Pomona site subscription, which has been prepaid by your institution. You are able to download as long as you have a valid cpp.edu email. Click here to download ChemBioDraw Ultra 13.0, and access any related database subscriptions.
